Up and running !

January 4, 2012 at 10:59:55 AM UTC

nice :D

January 4, 2012 at 11:07:42 AM UTC

digging the background!

January 4, 2012 at 11:26:54 AM UTC

Cool background. 4 Massmans there :D

January 4, 2012 at 12:57:10 PM UTC

So fighting for #1st or slacking for 11th....Choices

January 4, 2012 at 2:46:27 PM UTC

1st, 6th and 11th. Looks awesome. Can we delete scores? I mean, upload for example a P15000 marks and delete it for upload another one with P13000 marks? The system don't allow replace an score with a lower one.

January 4, 2012 at 2:50:27 PM UTC

Yes. It is allowed :).

January 4, 2012 at 3:23:42 PM UTC

Nice :D

January 4, 2012 at 8:41:57 PM UTC

Looks like a good challenge :)

Do ES CPUs are allowed?

January 4, 2012 at 11:17:50 PM UTC

Love the background!

January 5, 2012 at 5:55:21 AM UTC

Well...locking cores in Intel allowed i hope???

January 5, 2012 at 8:25:41 AM UTC

No. Enabling more cores is allowed; disabling them is not.

January 5, 2012 at 9:31:51 AM UTC

^^ok...no biggie :P

January 5, 2012 at 9:36:18 AM UTC

What about HT ? Like on a 2600k can it be used or can it be turned off... Or it can't be used at all ?

January 5, 2012 at 9:51:21 AM UTC

2600K = 4x CPU

January 5, 2012 at 11:17:45 AM UTC

U call this background ? Its a pic of Massman clonings! :P

p.p. I don't like the concept. Not agreed some1 tricky to win with lower score. It ruin the purpose of best tweaked and highest score to win. -1

January 5, 2012 at 11:21:27 AM UTC

If you have the highest score, you get 10 points. Which is the highest amount of points you can win per stage.

January 5, 2012 at 11:35:28 AM UTC

So, do I have to consider that ES are allowed?

January 5, 2012 at 12:33:27 PM UTC

If you have the highest score, you get 10 points. Which is the highest amount of points you can win per stage.

I mean that if i win 3 stages and screw on 2 there is chance someone to get lucky with adding/removing poor scores and to be 4 or more times 6-th or 11-th and he may win the competition. So at the end the winner will be not the best overclocker with best results it will be the most sneaky and tricky one. This is overclocking community not advanced school, point are rewarded by our oc achievements not sneaky tactics. It will be a "cold war" not competition. But it is up to us after all, if someone not like conditions may not join it. :)

January 5, 2012 at 1:50:47 PM UTC

So, do I have to consider that ES are allowed?

For a fair competition, I guess not :D

I think that this gives to the non-extreme overclockers a better chance to win a competition, we both know that at the end guys with LN2 and sub-zero temps are the possible winners. With the same points in three different places, non-extreme overclockers can fight among them and get a chance to win.

January 5, 2012 at 2:04:49 PM UTC

It's not about to be fair. ES are not better than other. I ask that because the only cpu I got is a ES.

January 5, 2012 at 2:30:34 PM UTC

A different (and better approach) could be to award the lowest scores, too - like if you have 11 teams competing you could give 10-8-6-5-4-3-4-5-6-8-10 points for a stage.

Fighting for the 5th score is quite silly, you cant really aim for it while benching - you got no real target, you can't push the system in any direction and have a better chance of winning.

January 5, 2012 at 3:21:03 PM UTC

I personally don't like the idea of deleting better score and replacing it with worse. I'd rather submit my best score on water than aiming at the 6th place with lower clocks than my current 24/7. There won't be any effort in that score.

Good that you can still fight for the first place and take 10 points, but let's consider the other possible situation.

I'm fighting with knopflerbruce and tiborrr for the first place and throw everything possible in the stage, but in the end I end up 3rd, simply because they are better than me. I won't be disappointed, because it's just the place I'm able to get, no skills/hardware/luck for more.

With the new rules, should I produce several results in different timeframes which don't represent my system's maximum and personal skills, and just wait and aim for the 6th place with deleting and uploading differenet scores, depending on other's scores?

Imagine 10 minutes untill the end all people deleting better scores and uploading worse scores, so they can take the 6th place.

I admire the idea of giving chances to air/water setups, but there are flaws as well. Don't know if there's a perfect solution.

It's not about to be fair. ES are not better than other. I ask that because the only cpu I got is a ES.

I'm ok with ES chips, as long as they are similar to retail chips (e.g. no unlocked multipliers, while the retail chip is locked). Since it's not a model based comp (e.g. Sempron 145 allowed only), I don't see a problem allowing ES chips.

January 5, 2012 at 3:31:11 PM UTC

There's no perfect solution, I'm sure.

Guys, please remember that the HOC competitions are mainly for fun and for testing things out. So, I'd like to know what all the people who are against it now, say after the competition has finished. Doesn't matter if your opinion is the same, different or more elaborate ("this is good, this is bad") :D.

Btw, last month we had a another point scheme and Overclock.net won. On their forums, there was actually a thread going with guys discussing how to approach it. So, they had a plan and they won.

January 6, 2012 at 8:47:42 PM UTC

End of month, top 3 places benchoff for Ultimate 1st place x days required for submission.

January 7, 2012 at 2:04:01 AM UTC

No. Enabling more cores is allowed; disabling them is not.

the system not allowed me to submit 555be unlock more 1 core for total 3core

January 7, 2012 at 10:16:08 AM UTC

No. Enabling more cores is allowed; disabling them is not.

Oh, I just realized it's configured differently. My bad!

Stages are based on stock CPU core_count and not on effective cores. Ie: in the 2xCPU category, you can technically use a quad socket system with 4 dual cores :).

I'll update the frontpage too so it's more clear :D

January 7, 2012 at 12:47:53 PM UTC

please do :P

so that, 1 processor will only allowed for 1 stage i.e. sempron 140 will allowed for 1x,555be for 2x,960t for 4x no matter how much the active cores, except disable the stock.

well then, ok.thx massman :)

January 7, 2012 at 1:39:29 PM UTC

I've updated the names of the stages so it's more clear.

- single core = all CPUs with 1 core (multiple cpus allowed)

- dual core = all CPUs with 2 cores (multiple cpus allowed)

- ...

January 7, 2012 at 4:30:39 PM UTC

So you can run a quad socket rig with 4 dual cores for the 2x stage? Lol.

January 7, 2012 at 4:39:06 PM UTC

Yes.

I don't think you'll be first, though.

January 7, 2012 at 7:42:00 PM UTC

i'm in

not so huge difer 2x vs 4x

January 7, 2012 at 8:03:20 PM UTC

Yes.

I don't think you'll be first, though.

It's still silly. But I doubt it's relevant except for maybe 1x, where I bet the gain by getting another core is alot bigger than in the other cases. It also limits the number of tri core chips alot, unfortunately - I guess you have to either use Phenom 8000-series, Athlon II 400-series or Phenom II 700-series. But here we won't have multi socket issues:D

January 7, 2012 at 8:30:24 PM UTC

Sorry for making challenges sometimes a little bit different.

January 7, 2012 at 9:02:22 PM UTC

It's not a disaster, but it should be pointed out in the competition main page that you can use multiple sockets. It's also a bit weird that you can use multi-socket boards, but unlocking cores isn't allowed.

This is just feedback, that's why we run these competitions - then we see flaws we didn't think of, and remember till we have more serious competitions. But these flaws must be mentioned, or we wouldn't be aware that they exist:D

January 8, 2012 at 5:00:03 PM UTC

So, X2 555 @ X3/X4 not allowed? :(

January 8, 2012 at 5:05:19 PM UTC

No. X2 555 only for dual core category.

January 8, 2012 at 6:58:28 PM UTC

No. X2 555 only for dual core category.

you might as well start removing them then

I'll look at the exact configuration tomorrow morning. When configured, the HCE should not require me manually checking submission if the are legit.

January 8, 2012 at 11:22:50 PM UTC

i think it´s no good idea to allow deleting results. if you try get the first place it´s your own risk ;)

this time i can´t compete, bekause i have just a eight-core system at moment :(

but i hope next time it will not be allowed to delete results when you try get first place and fail and than just try get 11th with a lower result... the more risk, the more fun :D

oh and please a benchmark, thats not used for boints. maybe aqunox or something like that :D

i can´t see allways the same scenes anymore xD

January 9, 2012 at 6:05:21 PM UTC

Why not unlock cores? That's part of overclock and you are getting more of you original CPU....

January 12, 2012 at 1:01:33 AM UTC

No. X2 555 only for dual core category.

No. Enabling more cores is allowed; disabling them is not.

Was reading all this and don't fully understand.

January 12, 2012 at 11:45:17 AM UTC

I kinda understand the reason behind unlocking cores being disallowed. Imho, it's not necessary. Unlocking is only possible with AMD cpus. Valid cases are:

X1 -> X2

X2 -> X3/X4

X3 -> X4

X4 -> X6, however Zosma based X4 are very rare

So, only one practical case is X2-> X3. X1 and X3 are AMD territory, others are dominated by Intel. So, let's say I'm an ordinary bencher that have not much money to buy a CPU on demand, but have an unlockable X2 555 in my daily rig. What's the point in limiting me to the X2 category only and not letting me play X3 and X4 as well?

I think the main reason was pushing people to use an actual X3 processor, not an unlocked one. But that's the only valid case where it actually makes sense in some extend.

I don't see a problem using unlocked sempron in X2 category or unlocked Phenom X2/Athlon X3 for the X4 category.

Maybe add a rule so X3 category is only for "native" X3?

January 12, 2012 at 12:45:36 PM UTC

Okay, finally figured it our. I was right from the beginning except for the unlocking part. So, you can use any amount of sockets, but can't unlock your CPU.

The reason is rather technical. Simply said: unlocking only works for CPU-based benchmarks.

January 12, 2012 at 1:03:17 PM UTC

i have deleted mine

January 12, 2012 at 1:04:08 PM UTC

I thought you said you couldn't submit??

the system not allowed me to submit 555be unlock more 1 core for total 3core

January 12, 2012 at 1:12:55 PM UTC

yes but i was submit for 2x :D. just confused about the rule (unlock.. unlock... unlock, just figure out what is that )

ok then. the 3dmark06 is so much cpu bound, i know by now

January 12, 2012 at 1:23:44 PM UTC

Okay, finally figured it our. I was right from the beginning except for the unlocking part. So, you can use any amount of sockets, but can't unlock your CPU.

The reason is rather technical. Simply said: unlocking only works for CPU-based benchmarks.

So, techically engine would allow you to submit a result with unlocked processor into the X2 category, because it only understands it as a dual-core processor. It counts the original model cores, not the actual. Since that's a 3D benchmark the usual hwbot rankings don't care about processor used, gotcha!

This makes it dificult (impossible?) to set the rules for the competition, so the engine would accept X2 555 @ X4 into the X4 category.

So, what if I unlock the CPU and submit it as X4 955 into the X4 stage? Just curios about this. It actually doesn't give me any advantage to original X4 955.

January 12, 2012 at 1:49:59 PM UTC

yes but i was submit for 2x :D. just confused about the rule (unlock.. unlock... unlock, just figure out what is that )

ok then. the 3dmark06 is so much cpu bound, i know by now

Wait. What did you try? Submit unlocked to 3x into the 2x stage?

January 12, 2012 at 8:00:39 PM UTC

actualy 4 of 'em.

just explain what were the term of unlocking idea + an example.

i have reported 3 cores of b55 can not submit to 3x stage.

and have not see a rig w/ 4 socket. sorry for misunderstood.

btw, what if ucc/acc on without extra core/s activated?

the name is pII x4 b55 but the cores remain 2x. fyi the engine not recognize b55 + any other unlocked cpus

January 25, 2012 at 1:52:28 AM UTC

can i submit scores with the same gpu but different stages?

January 25, 2012 at 3:58:42 AM UTC

can i submit scores with the same gpu but different stages?

AFAIK unlock/disable cores can't be done on this challenge...at least that you are talking about mobo with dual socket.

EDIT: MY mistake, I misread your post. Sorry

January 25, 2012 at 8:42:03 AM UTC

can i submit scores with the same gpu but different stages?

Sure.

January 25, 2012 at 3:38:04 PM UTC

perfect!

the rules were too open imo but its good. Team.XS FTW! :D

January 25, 2012 at 5:09:28 PM UTC

HD4890 FTW! :D

January 26, 2012 at 5:47:06 AM UTC

OCN is on kaiser with swiss ;)

January 29, 2012 at 11:30:54 AM UTC

Is Radeon Hd 7900 series allowed ?

BTW: Is still sais:

3DMark06 with 1, 2, 3, 4 and a 6 core configuration (unlocking allowed).

January 29, 2012 at 11:33:00 AM UTC

Couple technical questions regarding rules:

1) Is FX-4100 is 2x CPU or 4x CPU? Regarding the latest Microsoft patch...

2) Also, is unlocking Semprons to dual-cores and posting results under 1x CPU category allowed?

January 29, 2012 at 11:37:55 AM UTC

January 29, 2012 at 1:20:24 PM UTC

What about multi GPU ?

January 29, 2012 at 1:32:25 PM UTC

Also allowed.

January 29, 2012 at 1:52:25 PM UTC

Thanks Masbo, Sempron 145 it is then :D

January 29, 2012 at 2:34:32 PM UTC

Is it possible for 1 person to upload multiple results with different gpus but with the same CPU in one stage? (e.g. GTx 580, 570 and 6970 )

January 29, 2012 at 4:17:36 PM UTC

Yes, but only your best one will count.

January 29, 2012 at 6:23:38 PM UTC

What about multi GPU ?

Also allowed.

I don't understand, multi-GPU configurations are allowed? The rules clearly state only 1x GPU to be used.

January 29, 2012 at 6:26:20 PM UTC

Damn, mis-read.

Multi-CPU: allowed

Multi-GPU: not allowed.

January 29, 2012 at 10:59:36 PM UTC

OK, I've posted my 17407 single core, too bad I don't have any X3 at my place at the moment (gave it to my cousin, otherwise it ran benchmarks @ 5.4GHz+ under cascade). And too bad I can't post X6 results due to having ES chip :/

January 31, 2012 at 11:51:18 AM UTC

Sorry, but it amesso put the gpu in the cold?

Liquid or cold?

thanks

ES is bad? Darn I read this whole thread and saw people asking but no answer and the exclusions did not say no ES.

Any official clarification on this one.

January 31, 2012 at 12:46:09 PM UTC

No ES.

//edit: scratch that. Too close to the end of the comp to make a call on this. Sorry :(.

January 31, 2012 at 1:07:57 PM UTC

No ES.

Thank you. :)

January 31, 2012 at 3:15:10 PM UTC

so with 8hrs in the comp.. we get a definitive answer that we cant use ES..? Maybe should have 'hung' that rule out in plain site for all to see... just a thought.

Theres no less than 6x inquiries that went unanswered more than 20x days ago.

Hm. You are absolutely right. I'll revoke the ban on ES for this competition.

For the February challenge it's already on the frontpage. In case you want to file a complaint => http://hwbot.org/forum/private.php?do=newpm&u=47.

January 31, 2012 at 3:46:00 PM UTC

ES are never allowed in any competitions, are them? :o

maybe make a general rule for ES?
