Cool ))) Win98 in 2001SE, think it will be crazy round :D

April 30, 2016 at 8:14:20 PM UTC

Im curios if there are any PCIe cards with 98SE drivers... If not i still got the 4Core dual SATA2 :)

April 30, 2016 at 8:18:52 PM UTC

Now I Understand the idea of secret Bonus Round!!! The Winner will be the man, which have Fastest PC with Win98SE in the Whole WORLD!!! Damn! It will be really hardcore battle ))) :nana: :battle:

May 1, 2016 at 4:48:42 AM UTC

Kudos to @lanbonden to come up with this round :D

May 1, 2016 at 6:32:04 AM UTC

Yep.

Wiindows98 support by M$ was ended in 2006 and pcie was around for for awhile then.

Forget about this. In our small village has old school. There's still about a old grandfather teaches children "informatics". So he still writes drivers for Windows98SE!. It is necessary to come back to visit him for tea. :D

May 1, 2016 at 10:45:05 AM UTC

Really? Win98 without any hardware limitation?

Interesting... Tweaking time...

May 1, 2016 at 8:41:52 PM UTC

so whe can use modded drivers?

May 1, 2016 at 9:45:08 PM UTC

What do you mean with modded?^^ If you take a working 98 driver and add support for cards that were not supported originally, like it is done nowadays for 980TI and xp by inf modding, I personally see no problem - different thing is if you mess with the driver itself, this is not OK

exactly, want to try a 8400GS and hope it works..

driver im trying ot use 82.69 from mdgx

also kernelex , is it allowed?

May 1, 2016 at 10:34:59 PM UTC

This is a question Pieter and Christain Ney should answer (on kermelex)- personally I am very fond of tweaks also on software, but this might lead to problems at rating results and scores practically unable for me to judge. Because of this it would be easier for me to stay at inf modding only^^ - we will see :)

I can only agree that giving support for cards shouldnt be seen as against the rules and more like a good thing as this round is all about maxing out win98.

If someone manages to get a 6700k and a 980ti runing in win98, all the creds to that guy :)

May 2, 2016 at 12:46:57 PM UTC

And if you change the limits of the OS in major points, is it still win98?^^

May 2, 2016 at 7:04:49 PM UTC

Background says R4, should probably change that.

May 21, 2016 at 8:10:12 PM UTC

Strange silence in topic. Have somebody ran win98 or something better than LGA775? LGA 1155 or 1150?

May 21, 2016 at 8:15:38 PM UTC

I couldn't even get my 975X Asus + E7400 working in win98. And no G80 either. :(

May 21, 2016 at 8:21:30 PM UTC

And no G80 either. :(

Think it is impossible, there is no any driver for something better then GF79xx.

I can't run PCI-E GF6800U 512mb on NV40, because it is native agp gpu, and NV45 I do not have.

Can we ask Mr. Jen-Hsun Huang write driver-pack for win98SE? GTX1080 will perfect choise for this :D

May 21, 2016 at 8:37:01 PM UTC

GF8800 GTS/GTX/Ultra are supported by the 82.69 driver... or, well, they are included in the inf file. :D I tried Ultra, driver installed fine, but after reboot windows won't start anymore. Some kind of stack overflow error. Perhaps 768MB of video memory is too much. Unfortunately I don't have GTS 320 at hand to try.

May 21, 2016 at 8:40:09 PM UTC

I cannot do G80 or better either. Nor any better than 775.

Although I must admit, I haven't been losing any sleep over it either.

Had the same issue. I think 512MB of video memory is the max.

May 21, 2016 at 8:59:40 PM UTC

I have a tons of BSOD's, but think that it is possible to run Win98 on smth later then LGA775, because it runs in browsers, smartwatches etc.

8 series is not supported 82.69 drivers. the problem is not in memory. I tried 8600GT 256MB - same problem as with 8800 Ultra... driver is installed but windows not start. What about X1900 series? :)

May 21, 2016 at 10:14:08 PM UTC

X1xxx same as g80

Last catalyst is 6.2

X850

May 22, 2016 at 6:28:39 AM UTC

I've tried G80 and 256MB G92, no luck, tried modded drivers which include 88xx in the inf. Tried some modding myself as well, no luck. I haven't found anyone running any 8xxx card in 98.

I used to have a pc running 98 with a x1950 years back.

You can use the 1xxx cards and wile the stock drivers will not work with 8xxx cards, they're modded drivers that will work.

as for how i got the 1950 to work I can't recall, I wish I could it would be useful info. If I do recall it only worked with agp X1xxx cards. I think I did something with both kernelex and the Windows OS itself. But I could be way off. That was years ago

Even if you will be able to use x1xxx, i think that performance will be bad.

Power is nothing without control...

So I see that GF8 series nobody's run. About launch of Radeon X1950, does any proof link or screenshot exist in the web? And does somebody see that is possible to run in Win98 GF8 series or ATI X19xx and 1155 Socket or better? Today I have spend about 16 hours on attemtp to run Win98SE on my main system on SandyBridge 2600K and P67 Chipset, but on that moment a have a 100+ BSODs. But I will not stop, and continue to try this!

Ive seen rumors of people saying that GF8 maybe working but no proofs of it actually runing or even someone saying that they got it running.

Talking about x1950 Mr. Horse is the first person that Ive seen saying that he got it runing, others is the same as with GF8 that it should be possible with the right modded drivers.

When it comes to CPUs and motherboards, 775 is the newest Ive seen people run for sure, maybe some AM3 motherboard aswell but not sure?

May 22, 2016 at 8:31:48 PM UTC

lanbonden

maybe some AM3 motherboard aswell but not sure?

I'm run on Socket AM2+ with 2GB DDR2 no probs, but from 1155 Norhbridge go to the cpu core, and there is no native PCI bus, no AGP. On AMD platform is possible to run, but E8400 on 4.8-5Ghz will be faster AMD. I'm interesting from LGA1155, because Sandy easily goes to 5Ghz.

May 23, 2016 at 8:00:49 PM UTC

I'm going to the Moon :D

Little tizer from me ;) Do not ask me about my motherboard.

I see 2600K, that's a good sign.

May 25, 2016 at 9:12:38 AM UTC

is win98 SE allowed, too? or only win98?

May 25, 2016 at 9:18:53 AM UTC

Yes

May 25, 2016 at 10:09:43 AM UTC

damn >_<

the only GF7 i have is a 7200GS, i have lots of X19X0, but no X850 XT -.-

the idea of Win98-competition is great, but i have the wrong hardware to compete :(

maybe a 6800GT agp or X700/800 :/

it´s a pity, i really like the idea of this competition. would be a great idea for team- or country cup ;)

May 25, 2016 at 12:53:14 PM UTC

Even a 6800 series or X8xx series is not the best choice.

I think is difficult to reach 85xxxk but never say never

Exactly! I have very interesting motherboard on P67 Asrock P67 Professional Fata1ity with FDD, IDE, COM, and other features which is helpful for win98 =)

May 26, 2016 at 6:20:14 PM UTC

I made a raw precheck, all looked ok for me, but check yourself beforre the end as well^^

May 27, 2016 at 1:16:37 PM UTC

same here. my sandy-board has neither ide nor ps2 :(

but the worst: i don´t have any functional ide-hdd xD

May 27, 2016 at 1:18:45 PM UTC

But I run Win98 from a sata SSD, no probs

i´ve seen the competition to late. theres just one night left for me to try until competition ends :( (i´m not at home for weekend)

including find win98 SE >_< (or try the non-SE? but all drivers and service packs i've found are for SE -.-)

and i have no idea how to install on sata yet... no chance in that short time :(

else i would try on 2500k with X800 GTO :/

maybe there will be a classic-win competition in june? :) this time NT4 oder 95? ^_^

May 27, 2016 at 2:41:01 PM UTC

nice, i actually have found an old original win98 cd and allready downloaded service pack 3 and catalyst 6.2 for win98 SE :)

is there a trick or hack to install win98 on a sata-drive?

May 27, 2016 at 2:41:03 PM UTC

Yes, I really have no problem, just wish I could get my G92 to work

X1900XT allready would be fine to me xD

edit: i´m really out now. just got a invitation to a party tonight, now 0 nights left :(

my X800 GTO didn´t have any chance against 7900GTX and X850 XT anyway, but it would be a funny competition ^_^

have fun!

May 31, 2016 at 12:38:00 PM UTC

Awesome round, lots of interesting results, even a clarkfail entered :D - final check done, all valid for me, grats to the winner HWbotHellas O/C Team and to all for doing a very good job :)

May 31, 2016 at 1:26:13 PM UTC

hey, great results :)

nearly 70k pts on win98? ^^

it´s a pity i couldn´t compete, but next time i will :D

"Its also interesting to see that most folks used more then 256mb and some used over 1gb of ram. "

try to find a 256 mb ddr3-ram ;)
