Hey, will 8600GT GPU soldered on 8600GTS PCB be eligible for compo? :D

It's easier to replace GPU than four memory IC's :D

If I find time, i could take part in compo, just to encourage ppl to zorch. Not for prize :)

August 24, 2011 at 5:39:32 PM UTC

'Only' 8600GTS PCB?

I'm disappointed in you, TiN.

August 24, 2011 at 5:45:19 PM UTC

I'll use this one, I think

[hwbot=2185410]submission[/hwbot]

August 24, 2011 at 5:51:06 PM UTC

Massbo, yes or no, answer me :D Don't try to angry me soldering 8600GT on classified :P

August 24, 2011 at 5:55:20 PM UTC

Cyclone is the Master/Boss/Overlord on this one. I'm just the messenger.

So don't shoot me!

August 24, 2011 at 6:06:48 PM UTC

Don't push all the responsibility onto me PJ!:P

AFAIR soldering VGA chip on the elder card series PCB means moving to stronger category. Can't find the link on the appropriate posts here but this was already discussed at HWBOT earlier.

So the thing TiN wants to do means he would compete in GF 8600 GTS category, especially concerning both GPUs have the same shader-ROP-bit formula.

August 24, 2011 at 6:10:19 PM UTC

Oh, okay. This is complicated.

So the difference between 8600GT and 8600GTS is just higher clocks + different PCB ?

August 24, 2011 at 6:12:52 PM UTC

In general higher clocks + faster RAM chips + stronger PCB/GPU VRM (anyway I'm sure TiN would like to use frank so the last one doesn't matter much here).

August 24, 2011 at 7:34:49 PM UTC

So I cannot use my 8600GTS? :(

Still has 32 cuda cored

Still has 128bit memory

Has 512mb GDDR3

Has 1-PCI-E 6pin in.

August 24, 2011 at 7:53:39 PM UTC

It seems you can't, sorry..

GF 8600 GT category is still much more popular and competitive. One of the ideas was to involve more people into the game. Adding 8600 GTS means their owners will get a strong bonus with RAM OC so clocking 8600 GT would become a waste when competing the top. Means less results, less people.

August 24, 2011 at 7:55:57 PM UTC

Okay. Let's do it this way:

- de/re-soldering of GPU/MEM chips = not okay

- adding PWM to existing cards = okay

Moar Zombie !

August 24, 2011 at 8:11:44 PM UTC

damn, I only sold my card a couple of weeks ago :(

August 24, 2011 at 8:21:17 PM UTC

Get a new one Sam -) this shouldn't be a problem. Even when searching for a good one -)

p.s. added a russian-speaking contest thread for those who don't speak english well

I'm in, I have a card laying around :)

August 24, 2011 at 9:25:40 PM UTC

hum 8600 GT AGP will not be very helpful

August 25, 2011 at 11:04:59 PM UTC

Should have this one in the bag....

http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/MR_KROGOTH/1075c2200s700m.jpg?t=1306097751

Wait...this is uneven. Somebody with SB and a poorly clocking card can pound anybody with a slower processor and an excellent card.

August 26, 2011 at 8:12:35 AM UTC

SB above 5.0 brings tiny gains on this card .... if you want to be in contention - you'll have to SERIOUSLY clock that card anyway ;)

August 26, 2011 at 12:39:04 PM UTC

Guys I want enter to this one, but I can't understand this part:

To win one of the prizes, you must check in at the XtremeLabs.org forums and give a shout at their English-only section.

What I have do?

August 26, 2011 at 12:41:46 PM UTC

Go to the linked thread and say hello :)

August 26, 2011 at 1:08:39 PM UTC

Thanks Massman. Done.

@Xteme Labs

If the TIN will compete with the EVGA untouchable for any other competition misses the point.

Tin can show us the limits 8600GT but anyone else who is not a HW engineer as he will not be able to reach it

I say that this contest was interesting ;)

and in the and do you think limit CPU on 5500 of 5300

September 6, 2011 at 12:30:47 PM UTC

I may take part in competition just to encourage people to learn more and modify their cards in more ways.

Of course I have more capabilities to push vga to it's max than overclockers, but I will not share anything related to internal stuffs,

so my scores would not be for prizes, if you meant that.

Btw, I even may give away EVGA Untouchable to best performed modification on 8600GT during this contest, if I get impressed :)

So do your best and show us results.

September 6, 2011 at 12:55:50 PM UTC

So do your best and show us results.

Does the modified card need to work ? :D

Is that means that you won't enter with mods GPU to get the 1st place?

September 6, 2011 at 3:06:33 PM UTC

Does the modified card need to work ?

Yea, you should post results in this contest with full rule application :D

I would not be impressed with just bunch of wires and chockes soldered on cards here and there :P

September 6, 2011 at 3:08:24 PM UTC

Anything less than hooking up a nuclear reactor will considered "below average work" by TiN, I think.

September 6, 2011 at 4:58:45 PM UTC

Yea, even nuclear reactor connected to card cannot save massman from fail :D. That's correct.

September 6, 2011 at 5:22:40 PM UTC

need to study compatible GPU pinouts ... :P

September 6, 2011 at 7:05:23 PM UTC

I have 2 8600GTS, to bad I can't join this comp :( I really want an untouchable.

September 6, 2011 at 7:25:31 PM UTC

preparations are underway

thx to share how to increase PWM freq :)

I can not wait to see 8600GT with zombie and FAT pot

my GPU pot will be done for two weeks i hope reach to try pot before 25.9 :D

September 6, 2011 at 10:47:24 PM UTC

Hum, bought a 8600 GT on ebay as not tested. I received it, there is some caps removed, some ceramic stuff around memory chips that went off (How the fuck I dont know) and the PCB is danaged.

If i manage to fix this €@&(%¥~{, then lets make a zombie with X1950 Pro's power design.

Ehehe, I'm in, not for prizes but for untouchable

p.s. d0minat0r, IMO Fat Tek is senseless for these cards. Slim one is much more than enough.

(delete)

September 7, 2011 at 6:43:28 PM UTC

Well I have a 8600GT on the way, and a Dead Die 6850 as well. Lets see what I can do.

September 7, 2011 at 7:49:57 PM UTC

Excellent, one arrive to my house today and other is on the way my 1st GPU competition here lets see what can I do.

More like a No-Die 6850. It's not so much dead as gone.

September 7, 2011 at 9:04:23 PM UTC

Whats up Bob? Will you enter in the challenge?

looks better wit fat :D

@TiN

I probably take a Leadtek 8600GT on this card is RT9259A controller my question is

do i have adjust freq trim on RT_dis pin and how i now to which resistance set a trim for freq

in the datasheet there is a graph with the values maybe follow this values

regards from Pančevo Serbian Pripyat :D

September 8, 2011 at 2:01:02 PM UTC

I don't think that frequency adjustments will pay any role on such GPU.

But you can try youself, your idea is correct.

September 8, 2011 at 3:01:21 PM UTC

thx :)

sorry for my bad English

September 10, 2011 at 6:42:57 PM UTC

Hi, fellow overclockers!

I prepared some guide for those who want to try external power devices :)

In this case - it's ES Untouchable cards, which will be available for sale soon.

But all steps apply to any external VRM connected to 8600GT's exactly same way, so I post here. 8600GT is very easy card to try external power, and also benefits from it noticeable.

Diabolo80 I'm loving your ghetto VRM dude!

c'mon guys, show us some juicy benching tits at last! I've already seen 1107 MHz core on 8600 GT somewhere around here but push that babes more!

And don't be shy to publish pics with short stories in the forums!

September 22, 2011 at 10:11:27 PM UTC

Why you won't enter cyclone?

September 23, 2011 at 5:20:37 AM UTC

Diabolo80 I'm loving your ghetto VRM dude!

Tnx dude. I made new one "ghetto VRM" ;)

nice video and music. :)

September 23, 2011 at 1:03:03 PM UTC

Why you won't enter cyclone?

That does not seem to be fair 'cuz I'm the initiator and co-organizer of the contest -) Especially concerning I might fight for prizes.

Probably I will still join but for fun only.

That's a very good reason.

Which city are you on, Kiev? I ask this because I'm from Colombia (GTM -5) I'm trying to configure and additional clock for keep the real time of the contest because I will only be available to bench the 8600 GT in one day and I'm not sure if the contest will be open at that time.

Sorry if this sound as stupid question, but I'm really interested in this contest.

The deadline is calculated according to HWBOT general rules (GMT+1 or something like that, better to ask Massman or check the contest details) so it doesn't matter at all where do I live -)

Anyway yes, in Kiev -)

Brussels: GMT+2.

End of october, that becomes GMT+1 again.

So I must configure my other clock with the Brussels for know the current time of the contest? because I see Brussels as GTM +1 and not as GTM +2 as you say.

September 24, 2011 at 12:57:46 PM UTC

My GPU pot done in next week i hope we see in next competition

good work boys

September 24, 2011 at 1:02:00 PM UTC

In winter time, it's GMT+1. In summer time it's GMT+2.

At the moment of writing, this says it's 3PM GMT+2 and that's similar to what my watch is telling.

Just check the competition page when there are less than 24h to go. It'll be clear :)

September 25, 2011 at 8:46:37 PM UTC

Well, congrats to the winners. My GPUs was ready long time ago but the LN2 just arrive few minutes ago, so, not enough time for get a dencet bench.

Hope enter in a next contest with more time and win something. Congrats guys.

September 25, 2011 at 10:13:30 PM UTC

Hehe, Moonman! :D

September 25, 2011 at 10:18:57 PM UTC

Impressive contest end guys! It seemed to be boring but became a thriller several hours ago -) Expected much more from 12 & Diabolo80

p.s. Moonman and 12, please contact me via PMs to get your prizes!

September 26, 2011 at 3:30:58 AM UTC

For 3DMark/PCMark: benchmark settings have to be visible as well as the subtest scores

So.... I think score is not valid
