Comp limited to a specific CPU type? .. just want to make sure ..

"participance is according to the participant’s nationality. Ex: a citizen of Canada can only participate at the America Region Qualifier."

 

This is an important rule to make sure people know about. If you hold an American passport but live in EU/Asia, you have to participate in this qualifier.

This might be too early but I'm curious, last year the MOA finals and regional qualifiers were two person teams. Do we know if that will be the same this year?

At the end of competition on May 10th, the top three winners are qualified as MOA representative of the Americas. They are free to choose another friend to team upwith and have the chance to continue their journey to the MSI Master Overclocking Arena Grand Final!

Well i have to pass this one, im pretty sure that will be very diffcult to any of the Latin America people to win this competition and not due to economics or other money-related but due to hardware avaibity, the NA people will have the advantage when Ivy will be released and by the time we get the Ivy CPUs the competition finished.

Since Ivy Bridge will launch at the end of April (29th according to the rumours), they are not eligible for the Americas qualifier. For the EMEA and APAC qualifiers, they will be allowed.

I don't know if all qualifiers will be the same (usually it's not), the american qualifier will be composed of three benchmarks, in each of them you get different scores depending on the ranking position that you achieve.

After that you sum the scores obtained in all three rankings and you get a final ranking. Top three in this final ranking at the Americas will qualify for the worldwide finals. the 4th and 5th places will get prizes and two lucky OCers will receive prizes too.

Im not sure the z77 will be necessary with the z68a-GD80 doing quite well but better to be prepared.

Current best 3930k I have is x53, hopefully 1 or all of these 3 will be better.

I wish we had fair taxes here in Brazil. I've worked months to be able to get those hardware. we pay double+shipping.

It would be great if Colombia has gone in a fair way with hardware. But it seems really hard to believe.

 

I wish Americas had more spots on ww finals, but let's fight for what we've got.

That's because not much people buy those models, in fact, one place is 100% confirmed that they have it and others two told me the same but I have not seen the GPU yet, a little more expensive than in the USA but who cares? Now we only need to find out a good bunch of CPUs

On my best OS for SPi stage, the cpu-z doesn't show correctly the bus speed, so besides I got the correct multiplier, vcore, motherboard infos, RAM timmings, etc, the clock speed and RAM speeds are wrong. Can I use other software to show the correct speed with CPU-Z (requested by the rules) or even better can I simply use CPU-z even it shows the wrong clock?

 

The rules say that CPU-Z is mandatory, I'll use it, but I want to avoid issues since it cannot show all of the settings correctly.

Not just saying this but GD65 is a champ! No problems cold booting -45c, never lost mulit's 125 strap boots right up etc. Hard to beat for the price :)

You have to make sure CPU-Z is reading the frequencies correctly. Others can do it on a "super-tweaked" OS, so it's definitely possible.

Thanks for the answer. In fact it's not a super tweaked OS, but its a bug that I've been facing using 1155 cpus and the CPU-Z on windows 8.. but ok, I'll stick with the old xp. Thanks!

We had it discussed and we couldn't get to a point so we preferred to open the discussion to the community.

 

I thought that it's one competition from the begging to its ends, just with one special thing to avoid sandbaggers that everybody should post scores until May 4th, from there only the best 15 will continue to be able to post new scores but the old scores continue being valid and the ranking would be the same like it was before.

 

We had this point of disagreement due to the competition points shown on the right bar, where says that the first place will get 20points and so on. That ranking being shown there made some of us think that before the May 4th points would be (60/25/15) and after that, a new contest would start between the top 15 where the scores would be that one on the right bar (20 for first place).

 

I just want to have anyone from the hwbot stuff clarifying the rules.

 

I know that its written there, but it's an americas' competition so the majority of allowed people to take place don't have English as native language and our educational system doesn't care about that at all. I think that a little explanation could let us really glad.

I thought that it's one competition from the begging to its ends, just with one special thing to avoid sandbaggers that everybody should post scores until May 4th, from there only the best 15 will continue to be able to post new scores but the old scores continue being valid and the ranking would be the same like it was before.

 

We had this point of disagreement due to the competition points shown on the right bar, where says that the first place will get 20points and so on. That ranking being shown there made some of us think that before the May 4th points would be (60/25/15) and after that, a new contest would start between the top 15 where the scores would be that one on the right bar (20 for first place).

 

I just want to have anyone from the hwbot stuff clarifying the rules.

 

I know that its written there, but it's an americas' competition so the majority of allowed people to take place don't have English as native language and our educational system doesn't care about that at all. I think that a little explanation could let us really glad.

The point scheme remains the same throughout the competition; it doesn't matter when the best 3dmark11 score was posted, it will always get the full 60p.

 

After the elimination, only the best 15 overal ranked will be allowed to continue submitting results to the competition. This is to avoid sand-bagging until the very last minute.

 

The points on the right are indeed confusing and should be ignored/pulled.

Yeah, I noticed that already... I took that care of that on my backups, It's a valid HWBOT score but don't has the sysinfo enabled. I saw that rule few days after posting it. I won't change that score because of boints for now, but I'm aware that in the end it won't count for MOA.

One of these day RBUASS almost made me crap my pants saying that maybe the wall paper for each benchmark could be slightly different and I was running the benchs without picking the one of each page =P

Hwbot has its tricks... Every MOA I applied I saw people being disqualified due these small tricks..

I don't have the necessary gear to compete, not sure why others are not trying. If we would have known the hardware requirements sooner it would have helped tremendously. I think we only had a 2 week notice or something close to that.

 

I've got an MSI Z77 board but it hates my 2500K (so did another brand Z77 board I have)

I don't have an MSI X79 or MSI GPU, and the only MSI GPU's available in the USA need extensive mods to have a chance at the top 3.

Lightning is not warranty to get a good chip...

My best card reached about 1700 Mhz 3DM11 (I killed because it has a crap PWM easy to kill)...

Lightning we tested can not go neither near this clock (crap chip)...

Will test GTX 680 + Epower, but afraid I have no software to increase the clocks and good BIOS to NGTX680.

Hard times to hold a place ... lol

Yeah, I'm thinking the same as Rbuass. Not entirely sure a lightning is really needed to play here ... perhaps it's a safer bet considering the OCP mods blow up the PWM of reference cards. But in raw clocks ... not sure.

Not easy to hold a place, cause we have lots of great overclockers fighting. You can be sure I hope to see you there friend...almost sure OCA guys will represent USA there.

I am not sure the official BIOS from this GTX680 will work well at sub-zero...and not sure the Afterburner or EVGA Precision can give me good clocks (if the card agree to fly high... lol)

I will gladly post in thread if there is bios :) level playing field. I did not try card with OCP mod yet, and tin said that you cannot short the resistor for CB but must remove it completely so i will try this afternoon and give my findings.

yes ;) I removed it instead and works at -75c idle okay over -110 is freaks out. Problem now is even though its colder clocks are still the same limit. 1.62v is maximum or red screen and power is not stable enough to complete GT1 sooo I will retire this gtx-680 and focus on lightning

I did try and try to improve the results, ... , I really never used a motherboard like this... zilions of issues with 2 identical boards (X79 GD65)... and put RAM...remove RAM...put VGA...remove VGA... put RAM... remove RAM... remove CPU... put CPU... and finally... the motherboard is death... Tried the X79-GD65 a while ago .. had no problems with it whatsoever. Only thing that bugged me at that point what immature software, so couldn't change bclock/multiplier in windows lol

Yeah, the only X79A-GD65 I had here was pretty solid too. 162BCLK with 2600MEM no sweat. Still my favorite X79 board I think (even better than my XPower)

 

Duke;171075']i hope there's not alot of late sandbaggers. That would be dreadful to the ones that are actually participating. New rules = participation from the start of some sort.

 

If elimination takes place after, let's say, 3 days ... then sandbaggers will submit the 3rd day anyway.

It is really solid, but I don't know why, I got three of those on heaven now =( It can't be insulation problems. Each of those has different behavior, one got leds but nothing happens when you press the power button, the another one spins the fans very shortly but no beeps or debug codes and the third one powers up, post is really slow, bios is really lagged and cannot load any OS in any mode even in stock config....

 

On SB side the Z68 GD80 showed up more powerfull than any other sb board that I've ever tried, got highest clocks, highest bclk, (high vdrop as well =P) but it got a burnt mosfet =( The sad part is that it wasn't benching when it fired up, I was just opening the control center II =( and took the CPU with it, and the cpu took down two maximus (IV and V) that I used to check if it was dead too... I was bankrupt at the beginning, now besides being broke I'm almost outta mobos =(

dont blame you p67 motherboard, blame your luck! a very good CPU was needed in this competition to take a chance.

 

Yeah dad... lol, CPU only hits 5.1GHz, above that voltage isn't enough and BIOS won't give me the option to add more that 1.5V to CPU.

It is a shame that golden chip = winners, to be totally honest with really nice chips/cards it does not take very much skill. (superpi 32m is a partial exception.)

 

I get to flip a switch on a SS unit and play at 5.95 all day no problem for 32m and 03....that is not skill that is binning 60 chips on my newegg credit card...

 

So noone should feel bad, we are all doing the best we can with what we have at hand and all participants should be proud of their efforts!

Don't worry Splave, I have no more work here.

My 2600K be killed by the Z68-GD80....and unfortunately, after the board is death, I did test the CPU in the Maximus 5 Gene and CPU melt a socket pin (thats completely unlucky).

Gnidaol just explained and same to me.

Here we have lots and lots of issues... since motherboard death alone, to "vanish" RAM channel, to stop in BIOS post 60 (alone) ... to "do not work sometimes in stock" ... etc ... etc ... etc.

I think can be "mine" 2 units... or the units (or serial) that comes to Brazil, because Gnidaol got lots of issues too.

"binning 60 chips on my newegg credit card..." .... that's a dream no all Brazilian people that like hardware to buy on Newegg...thats really a hardware paradise we can not buy :(

 

 

 

@splave excellent job as usual; I hope I can get a place to MOA ans see you there.... ATM I have no a great 3DM11 score and after look for a MSI X79 in all Brazil and noticed it is not available in all country.

Splave its ok im not complaining, its not your fault, i know buying and binning cpus it requires effort and dedication (Time and Money, lots of money) but to be Honest MSI in POV had to wait Ivy Bridge Launch or just picked a benchmarks that no are not much CPU dependent. (3D03 an Spi32m are). Good Luck to the people who is still in the battle.

I don't. Whether it's SB or IB, it's the same for everybody. Handpicking of CPUs will always be needed.

 

The one argument for IB would be that it's more fun, but hey .. that's not MSI;s problem, and they probably have a schedule to hold on to.

Most people sold their good SB before launch to get some $$$$ before those Golden lost their value, also if they "Wanted to help" they should wait before launch because a regular IB does 6100 - 6500 and thats good enough for 3D03 and with some tweking good enough for SPI32M.

 

I Follow the idea of they have a Schedule to follow, and they cant run multiples regional competitions at the same time. i dont think their Wanted to Help anyone!.

I really tried to do a good job to qualify me for the MOA.

First, when I ran SuperPi on Z68, after open the Control Center, the motherboard died and took along my best 2600k.

So I needed a super result in 3Dmark11.

I got in a gray market (not legal import) a MSI X79 GD65, but the board was lots of problems.

Sometimes recognized quad channel, but in the midst of testing was with dual channel.

For no reason, stopped in the BIOS posts 60 or 67 and all too often, turn on and off immediately with BIOS FF post.

I got a friend from msolutions (reseller) another MSI X79 GD65 that he used for his own use.

We had a very good session with the board and I had got a very good result (for the first session and the first time I had touched on the motherboard).

I got 14,902 points, but was using 3DMark11 version 1.03 (which admittedly gives worse scores), not knowing that this competition could use version 1.01.

There were 15 LN2 liters for me, and I changed the version of 3Dmark11.

Only had time to adjust the machine with almost same settings we had used and step by step increased the score a lit bot to 15,062.

Just out of nowhere for no reason, the other day the motherboard is not turned on.

The motherboard was dead (OMG).

Before turn off in its last session, I was careful to return the settings to non-aggressive, but the next day, the motherboard would turn on and turn off without no reason.

I searched far and wide across Brazil and did not find any GD65 or a Big Bang to continue trying.

I decided to call MSI in Brazil, and had a disappointing response 'it still not arrived in Brazil yet, so we have no X79 GD65 and no Big Bang".

I begged for some help, said he was willing to pay for a UPS or FedEx to get a board, but the answer was negative.

Also with great difficulty, had to borrow my friend overheat, a 3930K that did 55X (not lots of stabile, but ok), still afraid of killing the preciousness of him.

To give you an idea, I have never tested an Ivy Bridge, and I am eager to have one in hand, which shows how difficult things are here.

I did not binned nothing of these components...except the 2600K I really looked for, but just easy to buy and sell in Brazil.

Sometimes I'm sad to know that in Brazil, a country so large and so much potential, companies still not invest in people.

I would love to buy from Newegg, Microcenter, Frys, CompUSA, Ebuypower, and many others and have access to things that are weapons and tools needed to all overclockers.

I would like not have pay U$ 6 a liter of LN2 (in a countro where "minimum salarium is U$320) and don't need to wait for ... 3 ... 4 or 5 days to receive LN2 to do a session ... or not need to order one week advance to do a session.

The effort that we have to do to get things done is really quite large, and people who know me from other countries, know the "party" I do when I travel to countries like Taiwan and the United States and bring to my country, things that we can not buy here (from a simple wired wrap to solder to processors, thermometers, motherboards and things that make us so delighted with prices far below what we paid).

Anyone who knows me knows I'm a simple person and spent more $ than I can, in love with this activity that I like so much.

I am not complaining about our situations, the reason I am talking this is for those who thought that we, the Latin Americans would not have the technical knowledge to go to the finals, and even to win, just like to prove them wrong and that despite our worst conditions (pc parts , nitrogen, prices, etc.) , I strongly believe in the ability of many Latin American talent that each day has more to magnify our community.

My sincere congratulations to Splave, which is a great overclocker, a very nice guy and very well loved in the community, because he really deserves to be champion because he is a champion.

Only want people think about if we had had the same conditions, "perhaps" the result was different.

Not taking the merits of the champion, the requirements to be champion are:

Knowledge, Luck, components.

For us, it is leaving the desired item components.

I hope I can hold a place to be there.

- we already followed-up with Futuremark regarding the scores on friday.

- today we confirmed with MSI that additional proof is necessary to validate both scores and confirm the ranking.

- MSI agreed with the validation procedure we suggested (livestream - more info later)

 

I'm checking with Rbuass and Gnidaol for the practical stuff now.

Alright, it's 5AM here, so I'm going to keep it short.

 

On monday, MSI and HWBOT agreed that the 3DMark11 results of Rbuass and Gnidaol were suspicious enough to ask for additional verification. The way to do it wasn't simple as, after all, people were accusing them of sharing the results. We agreed to have a livestream head-to-head benchmark session, monitored by yours truely.

 

Here were the guidelines:

 

To sum up:

 

- one desk

- two OC systems with components they used for the scores

- 5500 3930K

- 1200C9 memory

- 7970 lightning 1650/1860 (+/_ 25mhz range)

- same SSDs

 

Validation process:

 

- start livestream with both systems mounted, but not turned on

- first bootup at superzero temperatures to show active systems

- prepare systems to bench (drop temperatures etc)

- start run 5500/1200/1650/1860 (+/_ 25mhz range) simultaneously

 

when finished:

 

- make screenshot

- save validation file

- upload validation file instantly

- zoom in on screen to show score

 

Note:

 

- screenshot must contain notepad with nickname, gpuz, cpuz cpu/mb/mem, 3dmark11 score (like MOA submission)

- user must move 3dmark11 window to show it's active

- the idea is that both participants get a similar score as they got in the competition on two separate systems, each doing their own overclocking and run simultaneously.

 

The validation procedure ends when we saw:

 

- two systems running 5500/1200/1650/1860 simultaneously

- the scores on the screenshot match the score uploaded to Futuremark

 

The outcomes:

 

There are two possible outcomes for this procedure.

 

1) No proof was provided: in this case, we have no other option than to invalidate Gnidaol's 3DMark11 submission using our reserved right to reject any submission. In this case, the competition ranking will be recalculated.

2) The proof was provided: both scores remain perfectly valid and the ranking is unchanged.

The entire streaming started around 1:30AM GMT+2.

 

Around 2:38h local time, Gnidaol showed a 14.7k score. Here is the HWBOT validation link: http://hwbot.org/submission/2283713_gnidaol_3dmark11___performance_radeon_hd_7970_14717_marks. The score was done, confirmed, on livestream by Gnidaol.

 

For Rbuass, things went a little less smooth as he had many issues with the CPU stability in Physics (might be memory too). In any case, since the major concern was about using the same VGA for both results, we decided he could focus on putting out a GPU score to prove the second card was also capable of those clock frequencies. After lots and lots of troubles, he got a 14.5k GPU score at 1660MHz GPU clock (link), which is close enough to the score he submitted.

 

Conclusive lines

 

HWBOT and MSI went over the livestream and the results and decided that it forms more than sufficient proof of the full legitimacy of the 3DMark11 scores. Neither results will be pulled and the ranking remains as it is. This decision, backed up by both MSI and HWBOT, is final. Splave, Rbuass and Gnidaol go to the WW final.

 

On a more personal note, I'm not too happy with how things went down in this thread. I have no problems with raising questions about scores once in a while; in this case there was a valid basis for concern. What I do have a problem with is the typical opinion-maker who takes the concern and uses it to accuse people. Besides the screenshot, no one had any additional information that could objectively allow accusations. This type of noise-making is, in my opinion, below the community's standards. I hope you guys could think about that.

I highly recommend for next MOA qualifier to make Youtube video of the score mandatory to get rid of the acussation.

I highly recommend for next MOA qualifier to make Youtube video of the score mandatory to get rid of the acussation.

*and I highly recommend MSI doing less extraordinary exclusive initial LIVE EVENTS, while Grand Final can be a big show.... Media and people will love meeting up at at live event, more PR, more show, more action, more win - but obviously; more expensive.

Had my doubts about the scores, specially since one of my teammates was the victim, But nice to see the solution, initiative, time taken out by Massman. I am sure MSI just said yeah yeah, 'lets go with it', :P

 

And could not have said it earlier with doubts in my heart but now, a big congrats to Splave, Rbuass and Gnidaol. Simply mind blowing work done by you guyz.........

I'll say it again. MSI did not make the competition fair. Lightning cards should not have been allowed in the competition. They were not available to everyone. Huge fail.

Im sure it was not MSI's intention to have no stock, Im sure they would have rather been able to SELL their products to the contenders. But great work to all the guys that ran reference cards, you had to work 10x harder then us with lightnings....my wife could have clocked this card to 1680/1920 ;)

Lightning was not needed to win MOA, and you can get a very good Lightning or you can get only a regular card.

My best card was a reference, and I got better score than mine to MOA.

This score using 1.03 3DMark11 version is hardest and my MOA score using the cheatweaker to 1.01 version (that gives lots of points more).

The diference to the Lightning and to the reference is that reference, to go to the max, needs hardmods

That was my best card...I killed because VRM is not strong and mosfet was burned.

There are more work to try with reference, but you can see reference cards running 2000 Mhz at RAMs easier than Lightnings and their clocks GPU clocks similar.

Now...a question.

Some people complain about to have no acess to hardware...now...can feel what we from Brazil need to feel always.

If Lightnings was dificult to find there...you can understand for us...all...ever...can be hard to find.

FYI, '""there are NO ONE" X79GD 65 or Big Bang official import in all Brazil"...I think it shows how hard is to get hardware here.

My X79 GD65 was killed benching, and I looked for another one to improve my result...because I did not know what good result competirors coud have...

I did not find any one, in any place...and to import from ebay, can delay 1...2...3 months in the customs...

So I asked MSI Brazil...and the X79 still not arrived to Brazil.

 

I hope you understand.

rbuass, a big bang and gd65 was not needed to win this competition. I could have won first place on a gd45...its the lightning that won them. Why did you buy 3 of them if they were not necessary ;) Its never fun when hardware is not available I will agree to that. :D congrats on 2nd and 3rd place guys!

The problem is not to be Lightning Splave.

The problem is to have a MSI card (reference) with a BIOS that works hardest way.

Since I went to USA, I did prefer to buy Lightnings than reference... but MSI reference "was not available" too.

Since I was never tried one Lightning, sure, if I was in USA, prefer to buy the Lightning cards than reference (with a detail that, before to get the Lightning, I was thinking it must be so better than a reference, but noticed that it clocks is pretty similar...but not good VRM).

To win is needed a complete rig...so even you binned lots of CPUs that we can not bin in Brazil (lol).

I loved to go there...because I can go to places you have no in Brazil.

To give you a simple exemple.

To buy clothes for my daughter for 1 year and 9 months, there is a very good brand called Carter.

A set from 60 to 70 dollars in Brazil, I can buy U$6 or U$ 7 for an outlet.

I do not say that I bring a truckload of stuff from there and the trip ends up paying my work (That's a pity I can not always do this).

 

 

P.S. about GD45 I never tried, but even is good, I am sure is not SO good as GD65 or Big Bang

Some trash talk for the masses. If i had a lightning i would have pwned 3D11 in this comp with a 5.1ghz cpu. Unfortunately i didn't have the mods for the reference that Rbuass. The one mod i had killed a rare 600.00 MSI OC version card. Those were not my only losses. Try a 1K 6ghz 2500K also. Yea i just forked out over 3k for a lousy $180.00 motherboard. Thank you very much. :) It was fun though. And i just might buy a ticket to Taiwan for the fun of it. Really. :) I need some time away from the business.
